The benefits of cupping
Cupping can seem like an odd concept. In the classical Chinese medicine texts, there are phrases such as “drawing out pathogenic evils” and “relieving stagnation”. A more modern understanding is that cupping separates the muscle fascia allowing good blood flow. Cupping is an extremely quick and effective way of relieving muscle tension. I’ve also found it very useful in treating chest infections, something which is common practice in Asian households. By releasing the tissues we are again facilitating good blood flow. The body can transport the appropriate cells to fight the infection and transport the waste products away. This is what we mean by facilitating the body’s own healing processes.
In most cases a small amount of massage oil is applied first. The cups feel odd but not painful. If there is a lot of muscle tension (stagnation) the cup will leave a deep red mark. The marks disperse over about five days. Cupping is one of the quickest ways to relieve extreme tension. Once the body is moving more freely, then massage and exercise will suffice to maintain balance.
When is electro-acupuncture used?
Electro-acupuncture is the process of applying a current to acupuncture needles. The patient then feels a pleasant vibration sensation. Different frequencies are used either to illicit healing mechanisms or pain relief. I’ve found Electro-acupuncture particularly effective for arthritic knees, frozen shoulders and plantar fasciitis.
I’ve used electro-acupuncture personally after tearing a tendon in my knee. After a few weeks of intensive treatment, I was out in the hills in the Lake District (albeit carefully!) It’s a good option for active/sports people getting you back to training quickly.
For older patients, I aim to do a short course of treatment to get patients to a comfortable state so they’re not reliant on daily pain killers. I encourage strengthening exercises which are easier to do once the pain is under control. Most patients opt for a monthly maintenance session to keep things comfortable and can save the painkillers for occasional use.
