Acupuncture is a safe procedure during pregnancy
When practised by a fully trained acupuncturist, acupuncture is a perfectly safe procedure during pregnancy. In fact, it’s often a preferred non-pharmacological treatment option for some of the issues associated with pregnancy such as nausea, back pain and fatigue.
Acupuncture can help with nausea and back pain during pregnancy
It is particularly useful for nausea, but can also alleviate a number of other pregnancy symptoms. Many women have acupuncture for relief from back pain in the later stages of pregnancy. At 35 weeks, I encourage my patients to come for weekly treatments to prepare for the birth as this can be highly beneficial.
Delayed labour
There are effective acupuncture techniques to help promote labour once you have gone past your due date. Most midwives are keen on their patients trying acupuncture before resorting to medications for induction, as this is a kinder and better way of bringing on labour if you are overdue.
Breech presentation
Using a moxa technique is effective in encouraging the baby to find the correct position to assist with a breech presentation.
Post birth
Many women have acupuncture and other treatments post-birth especially if labour has been difficult or lengthy. Acupuncture can help to get the body back to normal quickly. The aim is to balance emotions such as anxiety and low mood or to relieve pain or fatigue in the post pregnancy period.
