I have had the great privilege of studying Fertility massage with Clare Blake of Fertility massage UK. This is a wonderfully relaxing back and abdominal massage designed to free up the tissues, stimulating nerve supply and improving blood flow to the reproductive and digestive organs.
What is fertility massage?
The massage begins with deep work on the lower back and sacrum encouraging correct alignment of the pelvis and stimulating the many nerves in the sacral area. In Chinese medicine our aim is always “restore normal function”. By loosening the tissues and muscles we are allowing blood to flow freely, supplying nutrients to internal organs and clearing waste products away. By loosening muscles also, we are able to move better. It is the movement of the muscles that helps to stimulate flow of blood and lymph but also to encourage peristaltic movement in the bowels.
The abdominal massage extends from just below the ribs around the area of the stomach, spleen and liver down into the small and large bowel then to the uterus and bladder area. Many of us, especially Women are taught to feel a bit embarressed about our tummies (especially if they’re not as slim and toned as the model in the picture above). A lot of people will hold tension in the abdominal area which may inhibit correct organ function, digestion and may be responsible for menstrual pain and irregularities.
Who can benefit from fertility massage?
Whilst the massage is primarily aimed at those trying to conceive, it can be of benefit to anyone who is experiencing issues in the lower back or abdominal area.
When is the best time to have the massage?
For Women actively trying to conceive, the optimum time to have this massage is between the end of the menstrual bleed and before ovulation.
